Movie Loft presents “The Music of Chance”

Movie Loft continues its series of underseen gems filmed in the Old North State!

Movie Loft gambols into March with a screening of absurdist drama The Music of Chance (1993)! Paul Auster adapted his own 1990 novel for the screen with Phillip Haas (Angels and Insects, The Blood Oranges) directing this bizarre tale of games, (un)freedom, labor and fate.

Jim Nashe (Mandy Patinkin) picks up a hitchhiker named Jack Pozzi (James Spader), a professional gambler with a proposition for a buy-in to a high-stakes poker game. The two visit a sprawling rural estate where two wealthy older gentlemen, Flower and Stone, await to cut the cards. And, soon after, things really take a turn! M. Emmet Walsh is there as the caretaker, while Samantha Mathis and Chris Penn turn up later to boot.

Much of ‘The Music of Chance’ was filmed in and around the Chinqua Penn Plantation, a sprawling manor property near Reidsville, NC. Along with more footage from the Piedmont countryside, there are also shots of downtown Winston-Salem.

The shuffled music of James Chance will be skronkin’, along with hot wieners on the grill, starting at 7. Movie to roll around 8. FREE, donations appreciated! BYO or sample what’s on hand.
