Movie Loft presents “Straight Time”
Join Movie Loft for the concluding gathering of the Harry Dean Stanton Appreciation Society!
This whole year, Movie Loft has tested Roger Ebert’s “Stanton-Walsh” rule, which states that any movie that features M. Emmet Walsh or Harry Dean Stanton, however briefly, cannot be all bad.
And the only title with the fine distinction of featuring BOTH Harry Dean Stanton and M. Emmet Walsh is the 1978 crime drama Straight Time! From director Ulu Grosbard (True Confessions, Georgia) comes this tale of career criminal Max Dembo (Dustin Hoffman), out on parole and trying to hew to the straight and narrow. Parole officer Earl Frank (Walsh) is on his ass and conspirators Jerry Schue (Stanton) and Willy Darin (Gary Busey) aren’t helping things, though employment agency clerk Jenny Mercer (Theresa Russell) is doing her best.
Also featuring Kathy Bates, a second Busey in Jake, and some remarkably seedy late-70s LA environs. “Can he go straight or will he go straight back inside?”
