Animation artist open house + “The Adventures of Prince Achmed”

Artists from our first residency share their multi-plane shadow puppet animation technique and screen Lotte Reininger’s 1926 animated wonder!

Durham animator Stella Rosalie Rosen and formerly-of-Durham puppeteer Nyssa Collins have teamed up this week to work on a new animated film, Cosmic Gorilla, at Shadowbox. They’re building shadow puppets and a multiplane camera setup, similar to what Walt Disney used for Snow White, to create their tale of an omnipotent simian who learns that beliefs without action can support a harmful status quo.

They will open the studio to present a bit of their work and process at 5:30 pm. Then at 7, they’ll screen legendary German animator Lotte Reininger’s 1926 shadow puppet marvel, “The Adventures of Prince Achmed,” which was an inspiration for their new film.

FREE, open studio at 5:30 pm, movie at 7 pm.
