Ghost Trees + Spookstina + subterrene
Ghost Trees, the Charlotte nearly-free jazz outfit, has built its music and reputation as a barebones ensemble. Two elements, tenor sax and drums, provide the two most basic tenets of music, melody and rhythm. Two players, Brent Bagwell and Seth Nanaa, express 14 years of collaboration (and 16 of friendship) in the now chaotic, now harmonious ebb and flow of advanced musical communication. Bebop stutter-steps blur into lyrical cool jazz heads blur into clattering avant-garde, often in the same cut, with the 1:1 ratio of Bagwell’s sax to Nanaa’s drums evidently making Ghost Trees’ wickedly nimble improvisation possible.
Spookstina creates layers of textural drone through use of bass, contact mics, vocals, found sound, and more. Through sound, she explores ideas of impermanence, biophonic & geophonic mimicry, and meditative states. Most of her work is live and improvised, with performances and residencies across the US, MX, & EU.
As subterrene, Grant Stewart meshes melodic drones with their own broken counterparts to realize textural soundscapes. Through releases on Mystery School, Bad Architect, and Poverty Electronics, he has searched for this hybridization, often evoking deep-ocean pressure or wavering visions through a deft navigation of sound. In the words of reviewer Darren Bergstein, subterrene presents “a veritable bastardizing of rugged Eno-charred terrain that challenges your aural foibles.”
