Part of Shadowbox’s Art House Cinema Pop-Up Oct 29 – Nov 4!
Join Nicole Berland from Night School Bar’s film school for a one-night screening and discussion of Luca Gaudagnino’s 2018 macabre masterpiece, Suspiria.
A perfect crescendo for spooky season, Guadagnino’s horror film is a 21st-century reinterpretation of the 1977 Dario Argento cult classic. Clearly enamored of the original, Guadagnino channels Argento’s delicious visuals, and replaces Goblin’s iconic prog rock score with haunting krautrock from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.
The film follows young Susie Bannon, who makes her way from Mennonite Ohio to an elite dance academy in Berlin. Just as her star rises, more of her fellow students begin disappearing. Transpiring over a languid 152 minutes, Guadanino’s remake retrieves much of what’s best from the original and draws it out into something that is as muted and violent as the soft voice and frenzied dancing of the film’s star, Dakota Johnson.
It’s a polarizing film, with much to unpack, but you should come ready to immerse yourself in a witchy, and occasionally messy, dance of sisterhood, magic, and blood.
Nicole Berland will introduce the film and lead a short discussion afterwards.
This is a FREE screening, but please RSVP here!
